The long awaited soundtrack of the movie Sakkarakatti has hit the stores yesterday. Rahman has scored half a dozen bright and colorful songs for this ‘Shanthanu’ starrer.
1. Taxi Taxi*****
Singers: Benny Dayal, Blaaze, Viviane Chaix and Javed Ali
Lyrics: Blaaze, Na Muthukumar, Viviane Chaix
Basically a friendship song like Mustafa, full of Blaaze’s Rap interludes, Vivian’s ooh laas and french chants. The rhythm of this song is pretty ordinary but the vocals and other additions take it to the next level. This song gives us the feel of a ‘Bollywood’ number. Lyrics bringout this ‘ipod’ age’s friends and their relationships with a bit of slapstick humour. Pals dont miss this!
2. Marudhani****
Singers: Madhushree, A R Rahman, Henry
Lyrics : Vaali
Probably a heroine solo melody, with soft beats and chorus. Pleasant interludes and Rahman’s hummings complete this soft but quick number. This is the only song which contains ARR’s voice in this album. Dynamic Vaali’s lyrics are spoiled by Madhushree’s poor Tamil accent. So a kind request to Madhushree:’Please find a good tamil teacher before commiting your next Tamil song’.
3. I Miss You Da*****
Singers: Chinmayi, Indai Haza
Lyrics : Na Muthukumar
Another solo female song in which ARR has experimented with converting different ordinary sounds into one sweet melody. Appears to be a fusion of pop music and dubstep genre. Chinmayi’s versatile voice realises ARR’s dream. Also the song progresses with ‘Adhiradikkaran’ kind of beats now and then. The chorus and beats are avant-garde. May demand a lot of listening before you love it. Muthukumar’s lyrics are very ordinary and fails to impress. The feel produced by this song is similar to the effect produced by ‘Maja Maja'(SOK) and ‘Kettena'(Desam). A song for the world!
4.Chinnamma****
Singers: Benny Dayal, Chinmayi
Lyrics : Pa Vijay
A Tamil version of the song ‘Chinnamma Chilakkamma’ from Rahman’s soundtrack for the Hindi movie Meenaxi(2004). Though a repetitive seranade from ARR, not disappointing. Benny sings very similar to Sukhwinder, the singer of the original Chinnamma. But Benny beats Sukhwinder with his proper Tamil pronounciation. We could hear Sukhwinder’s humming at the end point of this song!. Benny’s adaptable voice eeks out his best at the high pitch areas. Chinmayi in this song sounds very different from ‘I miss you da’. Both the singers have given their maximum effort in this song. Pa Vijay’s lyrics have perfectly fit this Andhra folk song. The song begins like an old Telugu song played in an old philips radio. Fantastic! One of ARR’s best folk numbers. The Andhra feel reminds us ‘Errani Kurrani'(Kadhalan) song. With the usage of folk instruments and a few western equipment Rahman has challenged the kuthu song world!
5.Elay*****
Singers: Krish ,Naresh Iyer
Lyrics : Na Muthukumar
Seems to be the ‘soul’ song of this movie. Full of guitar sounds, violin pieces and quick beats. Though the music is of the Rock genre, the lyrics and violin gives us ‘at home’ feeling. A positive and pleasant song which bridges east and west. Though a number of instruments are used, nothing goes haywire. Wonderful orchestration and coordination by ARR. In this song Muthukumar gains what he lost in ‘I Miss you da’ song. The song ends by providing us a jazz feel. Krish and Naresh sing exactly with the feel of south Indian boys. At times this song reminds us ‘Roobaaroo'(Rang De Basanti). But the utilisation of other instruments makes this song different.
6.Naan Epodhu****
Singers: Reena Bharadwaj
Lyrics : Pa Vijay
Another reiteration from Meenaxi. The Same singer is called back. A wonderful North Indian style song, with a lovely tune and guitar interludes. Beautiful addition of effects at right times. Right choice of voice. Totally an awesome song. But, this awesome song is stained by the awkward pronounciation(Pen or pin??!!) of the singer. This is the third female solo song of this album and the shortest one. Pa Vijay’s romantic lyrics along with excellent instrumentation doesn’t fail to create the intended swooning effect. A sweet song!

Good review but a slight correction
Chinamma in Hindi was sung by Sukhwinder and not Udit ….

Good review….. but think Madhushree has done an awesome job in Maruthanni. She beautified the song with her honey coated voice… 🙂 ……
Hi Ani
Yup. A mistake…. Thanks for correcting me!
Hi Dinesh
Of course I dont deny that Madhushree’s voice is sweet and intoxicating. But still she has to improve her Tamil accent.
I am great fan of A.R.Rehman music escpecially rubaroo from rang de basanti.
Excellent review spontic.. i m proved to be ar fan.. it might be small mistake of Madhushree tamill accent… but AR music covers the mistake she did. but it didnt spoil the song.. Madhushree has awesome voice like as dinesh said..
i really love taxi song.. what a fabulous music… i still couldn’t able find out the instrument AR used in this particular song… tell me if any of u guys know… kl dudes tc
Elay eppadi irukken—:) inda elay song summa kaalaila boost kudikkira madiri irukku. this song is super with violin background.Awesome song. naan eppodhu, chinnamma as usual meenaxi remake no comment on these as its already abig hit in hindi, ‘I miss you’ is ok average tune should have better.Taxi Taxi is a comical song I heard the beats in many discothiks.Marudhani is also ARR’s hindi ‘Razia’ listen to ‘Dheeme Dheeme gaaon houle houle gaaun’.
so to me 3 are remade 2 original superb 1 average
sorry its ARR ‘zubeida’ film not razia
azar, there seems to be no new instruments used in the Taxi song. If you are referring to the bell tone, its the bell tone of the ride cymbal in a drums. Drummers have been using this for decades. The arrangement of the song makes it catchy.
Very good review, Nice Album.
All the songs are below average.Rehmans quality is missing.
AS u said above the songs are not that much valid as far as my opinion. rahman has to concentrate more on tunes, these songs seems tawdry.
hi Zippys & karthik i thing are u have ear or not? these are most valuble songs and beats done by arr. a best job done by him .i heard Marudhani and taxi songs 70+ times they are very superb for me.arr proved once again god of music.harris and yuvan may beg the music from him
Very nice review ! As the biggest fan of the Maestro of all time, Rahman, I agree with you !
Rahman’s work is outstanding, even if lyrics are not extraordinary … to say the truth it’s average ! Na.Muthukumar is a fabulous lyricist but here, he has done a average work ! Perhaps Thamarai and Vairamuthu would have done very better things !
Instruments, editing, synchronisation, singers (Madhushree must try to pronounce better next time !) … everything is splendid !
If ARR is the King of Music, Harrish and Yuvan (dnt forget Vidhysagar) are the Princes !
It wasn’t a bad album, but I don’t get why some arr fans are gushing over it so much. I do agree with karthik above.
I AM a arr fan, but that doesn’t mean every album of his is wonderful.
Sidhu, if u call this one of his best works, that’s an insult to the past 15 years of music rahman has given us. As a rahman fan, u should know this. Does this compare anywhere with Kannathil Muthamittal, or Rang De Basanti? Or even comparing commercial movies, does it rank even close to Jillunu Oru Kadhal, or Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, or Sivaji? Those were good commercial albums, and this is definitely sub-par. There are some good songs, and nice expirementation in some songs, no doubt. But that’s no reason to blindly support him no matter what; doing so would be insulting all the previous great works he has produced.
That said, I think people should stop comparing composers, and bashing each others’ fans. HJ does good music, and so do YSR and vidhyasagar and everyone else. Comparing them and fighting is pointless. Fact is, there have been HJ and YSR albums which are MUCH better than Sakkarakatti. I’m not saying they’re better than ARR, only that they have beaten Sakkarakatti before. Pls stop these meaningless fan fights and enjoy the music. After all, arr only releases 2-3 albums a year. Let’s open our ears to the other worthwhile music as well.
I completely agree with u Kannan. “Sakkarakatti” is not ARR’s best album. Comparing to other albums whgo were released this year, this one is very nice. The quality is excellent. But as you told, we can’t compare this one with the EXCELLEN albums that he gave us 10-15 years before. No one can do a “Roja”, Kadhalan”, “Duet”, “Gentleman”,etc.
There are perhaps the best examples of Tamil Music (of course, I mean also Ilayarajah in the 80’s and MSV in the 60-70’s) …
By the way, I am 100% Ok with you concerning fan who compare MDs. I always think that we have the greatest MDs like ARR, Harrish, Yuvan, Vidiyasagar, Ilayarajah, etc. so it’s foolish to waste there work by comparing them like Cinema actors !
“Marudhani” is the best song that stands out from other songs. Two songs are directly lifted from Hindi flick Meenaxi, and since we had heard them so many times, they dont seem to interest us The song – I miss you daa is good, while the songs Elay and Taxi are having bollywood style.
The song Marudhani is really wonderful, and i have heard it more than 50 times…..
Nice review, well i dont complain some of the people above who didnt like the album. Everyone has their own views. But for me this album is best album of the year in Tamil. ARR who rocked with 3 Hindi releases this year (JA, JTYJN and ADA) is back with bang with super rocking Tamil album Sakkarakatti. ARR after stupendous success of Sivaji and ATM last year will rock this year too. Hail Rahman. ARR- Emperor of Music
I am also completely agreeing with you kannan, besides all comparisons ARR and all others making nice work for the world of music. But in earlier there songs have a good back up of our tradition and culture,in sakkarakatti I coudn,t find one in that sense eventhough it is a new generation film.
As Kannan pointed the quaity of music is facing some problem from A to Z.All of them want tro make ‘tsunamis’.
Always small ‘wave’s are more sweet.
Sakkarakatti is also missing sometrhing that we obtained from ARR’s earlier works. The song “Elay eppadi irukken” have nice instrumentaion in the background.
but in the same i feel there is some inspirations from “The corrs (3 beauties)” groups album song.
Thank you
WARNING: Long rant to follow….
Madhushree has got to stop pronouncing like that! Her accent is terrible and I don’t know why Rahman or Harris or Yuvan want her to sing….
She MUST improve her accent and try to learn a bit of Tamil.
Maybe she thinks it is stylish to pronounce like that??? I don’t know why f*** they still have her sing in Tamil songs….
The song is nice but it spoiled by her voice or rather her accent. I though Udit Narayanan was bad, but she seems to be worse.Someone please tell her that her voice sucks.
On the whole, a nice album by Rahman. “Elay” is a great song. The others are also not bad…
“She beautified the song with her honey coated voice… 🙂 ”
You’re kidding, right?:)
Hi Nice review
But elay song background piece is from Braveheart theme music (Basically Celtic) and Taxi Song follows Shakira La Tortura Music if you hear the Interludes………….
You can check it out…….
“But elay song background piece is from Braveheart theme music (Basically Celtic)”
Just because you use violins, it does not become Celtic or Scottish music!!!
If you listen even more closely, the violin piece is in “Kedara Gowla”, a carnatic raga.
As for “Taxi”, I think that the beats are closer to “La Gasolina”? I think Rahman has given it his own touch.
Of all the albums of 2008, I think this is easily the best!
I agree with Dayan, but only a little. Sure Duet, Roja are notable works. But doing the same now eg., composing a sax theme with Kadri Gopalnath isnt gonna work again. I feel A R Rahman is composing with alot of maturity and a sense of the era. Remember ottagatha kattikko copied by French artists?
i love that taxi taxi especially for my fav Blaaze
Madhushree’s must learn to pronounce the words properly. Although the song “madrudhani” is sung well, she has not done justice to the lyrics. I always loved and appreciated the fact that ARR brings in new voices but he kind of pays little or no attention to the “Thamizh ucharippu” by these non-Tamilian singers. I wonder if anyone would encourage Hindi or English words to be pronounced like that. I know so many criticized SPB for singing Hindi songs! (the “phela phela’ song from Hum apke hain Kaun) Singers should first be taught the difference between sounds of letters. Example, small “la” and big “LA”, small “ni” and big NI” If you listen to this song the very first word itself is being pronounced wrong; Madrudhani, the last syllable “ni” should sound bold like in “thanni” (water)
Anyways… can’t complain too much because many Tamil speaking folks don’t speak the right way so no point in blaming a non-Tamilian to pronounce it right. But when it comes to exposing yourself to the world it would be appreciated if some efforts are taken to speak the language the right way or else the music directors must reconsider replacing some one else! This is just my opinion.
